The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning alongside high surf and beach hazard advisories for Virginia Beach, effective from September 23 through September 25, 2026.
The National Weather Service issued the alerts beginning September 22 at 2:57 PM EDT. Conditions are expected to impact the Virginia Beach area with varying hazards over the course of the multi-day event.
For the Coastal Flood Warning, two to three feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways from 2 PM Wednesday to 4 AM EDT Friday. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory indicates up to one foot of inundation above ground level in similar low-lying areas until 2 PM EDT Wednesday.
A High Surf Advisory is in effect from 7 AM Wednesday to 6 PM EDT Thursday, bringing large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone. A Beach Hazards Statement also notes a high risk of rip currents through Wednesday evening.
Anticipated impacts include numerous road closures and potential inundation of low-lying property, including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure. Shoreline erosion, localized beach erosion, and dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are also expected.
