Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory Issued for Coastal New Jersey
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, and High Rip Current Risk for Coastal Ocean, Coastal Atlantic, and Atlantic Coastal Cape May. The flood warning is active until 2:00 AM EDT on Saturday, September 26.
The Coastal Flood Warning forecasts one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This is expected to cause widespread roadway flooding in coastal and bayside communities, rendering many roads impassable. Some damage to vulnerable structures is possible, and moderate to major tidal flooding could continue into the weekend, especially within back bays.
Simultaneously, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6:00 PM EDT Saturday, bringing breaking waves of up to 9 feet to the surf zone. A High Rip Current Risk is also active through Saturday evening. These conditions present dangerous swimming and surfing environments, and are expected to cause significant beach erosion and potentially breach sand dunes.
According to the National Weather Service, a Coastal Flood Warning indicates that moderate or major tidal flooding is occurring or imminent. Local residents are advised to prepare for rising water levels, protect life and property, and consult the National Water Prediction Service website for additional information.
