Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory Issued for New Jersey Coast
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, and High Rip Current Risk for Atlantic Coastal Cape May and Coastal Atlantic. The alerts remain in effect through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 2:00 PM EDT Sunday, September 27. The warning anticipates two to three feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
Additionally, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT Sunday for large breaking waves of up to nine feet in the surf zone. A High Rip Current Risk is also active through Sunday evening, presenting dangerous swimming and surfing conditions along with localized beach erosion.
Impacts at this level may include severe flooding causing structural damage and widespread roadway flooding in coastal and bayside communities, as well as near inland tidal waterways. Some locations could become isolated by flood waters, and significant beach erosion with the potential breaching of sand dunes is expected.
Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to prepare for rising water levels and follow local emergency management recommendations. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water.
