Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory Issued for Virginia Beach
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning and multiple marine advisories for Virginia Beach, warning of coastal inundation and dangerous surf conditions. The alerts are in effect through early Friday morning.
The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has placed Virginia Beach under a Coastal Flood Warning from 2:00 PM EDT Wednesday, September 23, until 4:00 AM EDT Friday, September 25. Prior to the warning, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 2:00 PM EDT Wednesday. Additionally, a Beach Hazards Statement is active through Wednesday evening, and a High Surf Advisory is in place until 6:00 PM EDT Thursday.
Up to one foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways during the initial Coastal Flood Advisory. Once the Coastal Flood Warning begins on Wednesday afternoon, potential inundation may rise to between two and three feet. These conditions may result in numerous road closures, shoreline erosion, and the flooding of low-lying properties, including homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.
Along the beachfront, a high risk of rip currents is expected through Wednesday evening. Large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet are anticipated in the surf zone under the High Surf Advisory. These factors will create hazardous swimming and surfing conditions and cause localized beach erosion.
