Coastal Flood Warning and High Surf Advisory Issued for Virginia Beach

September 27, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, and Beach Hazards Statement for Virginia Beach. The active alerts warn of significant inundation, large breaking waves, and a high risk of rip currents.

The Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 2:00 PM EDT Sunday. Forecasters expect around two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas is anticipated, resulting in an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline.

The high water depth will be sufficient to close numerous roads and threaten properties. Flooding is expected to extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays, leading to additional road closures and the flooding of vehicles.

In addition to the coastal flooding, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 7:00 AM EDT Sunday, featuring large breaking waves of 8 to 10 feet in the surf zone. Furthermore, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Sunday evening due to a high risk of rip currents.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
