Coastal Flood Warning Issued for Kings and Southern Queens Counties
The National Weather Service in Upton, NY, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, and High Rip Current Risk for Kings and Southern Queens counties until Sunday evening.
The National Weather Service issued the alerts beginning September 26 at 5:14 AM EDT. The Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 6:00 PM EDT on September 27. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is active until 8:00 PM EDT Sunday, and a High Rip Current Risk continues through Sunday evening.
The event brings up to 2 1/2 feet of inundation above ground level in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline. Widespread moderate to locally major flooding is expected, with major flooding primarily concerning vulnerable communities along Jamaica Bay, particularly along the north-facing shoreline of the Rockaways.
Impacts include numerous road closures and widespread flooding of low-lying property, including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront. Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded, and flooding will extend inland along tidal rivers and bays.
Beachfront impacts feature large breaking waves of 7 to 12 feet in the surf zone, along with 5 to 9 foot breaking waves and elevated water levels resulting in widespread dune erosion and beach flooding. Localized overwashes are possible where dune structures are compromised.
