Coastal Flood Warning Issued for Parts of New York Through Sunday Evening

September 26, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Upton, New York, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Bronx, Northwest Suffolk, Northern Queens, and Northern Nassau counties. The warning remains in effect until 6:00 PM EDT on Sunday, September 27.

According to the National Weather Service, water levels are expected to cause one to two feet, and locally up to two and a half feet, of inundation above ground level in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline. Flooding is anticipated to extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays.

The warning highlights widespread flooding affecting roads, parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes or businesses with basements located near the waterfront. Numerous road closures are likely during this period, and vehicles parked in vulnerable shoreline areas will likely become flooded.

Along shorefronts and beaches, breaking waves reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet combined with elevated water levels will result in areas of dune erosion. Damage to a few waterfront structures is also possible.

Splashover over seawalls and overwashes where dune structures are compromised may locally worsen the flooding of roadways and vulnerable structures situated behind protective dunes.
