The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for San Diego County Coastal Areas and Orange County Coastal, remaining in effect until 3 PM PDT Sunday.
Significant coastal flooding and beach erosion are likely during the Coastal Flood Warning. Additionally, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from Sunday morning until Sunday evening, bringing surf of 5 to 7 feet with local sets up to 9 feet. A Coastal Flood Advisory will follow from Sunday afternoon until Tuesday afternoon, during which minor coastal flooding is expected.
Impacts from the conditions include potential closures of numerous roads and beach boardwalks due to high water. Low-lying property, including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure, may flood during morning high tides alongside beach erosion. Elevated surf will also lead to a high risk of rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions.
The greatest impacts are occurring this morning from Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel, driven by a combination of increased swell, onshore winds, and high tides locally exceeding 7.5 feet. High tides are expected to lower each day into the middle of the week.
