Coastal Flood Warning Issued for Virginia Beach
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Virginia Beach, effective until Friday, September 25 at 4:00 AM EDT. Local residents should prepare for significant coastal inundation, high surf, and dangerous rip currents.
The Coastal Flood Warning, issued by the National Weather Service in Wakefield, VA, warns of two to three feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This widespread flooding is expected to result in an elevated threat of property damage to waterfront homes and businesses.
In addition to the flood warning, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6:00 PM EDT on Thursday, September 24, bringing large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet to the surf zone. A Beach Hazards Statement also indicates a high risk of rip currents through Thursday evening.
The expected water depths will be sufficient to close numerous roads and threaten properties near the coast. Flooding is projected to extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays, which will likely lead to road closures and flooded vehicles.
