Coastal Flood Warning Issued for Virginia Beach

September 25, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Virginia Beach, effective until Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Warning at 5:11 AM EDT on September 25, which remains in effect until 12:00 PM EDT on September 26. The advisory area includes Virginia Beach, where low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways are expected to experience two to three feet of inundation above ground level.

In addition to the coastal flooding, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6:00 AM EDT Saturday, warning of large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone. A Beach Hazards Statement is also active through Saturday evening due to a high risk of rip currents.

The impacts of the event include widespread flooding of vulnerable areas, creating an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. Water depths reaching 2 to 3 feet above ground level will result in the closure of numerous roads, flooded vehicles, and flooding that extends inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays.

Why it is dangerous and what to do

⚠️ Safety
• Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
• Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth if travel is required.
• Remain out of the water to avoid dangerous surf and hazardous swimming conditions.
