The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Virginia Beach, effective from September 26 at 2:36 AM EDT until September 27 at 1:00 AM EDT. The event brings threats of inundation, large breaking waves, and a high risk of rip currents.
The Coastal Flood Warning indicates two to three feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This flooding will extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays, resulting in some road closures and the flooding of vehicles.
In addition to the coastal flooding, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 7:00 AM EDT Sunday, featuring large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone. A Beach Hazards Statement is also active through Sunday evening, indicating a high risk of rip currents.
The impacts include widespread flooding of vulnerable areas, creating an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. The water depth will be sufficient to close numerous roads and threaten properties.
The National Weather Service warns that hazardous conditions will persist through the weekend, affecting travel and coastal safety across the region.
