Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Phoenix Metropolitan Area
The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Phoenix metropolitan area, in effect until 8:00 PM MST on September 10. High afternoon temperatures between 105 and 109 degrees are expected.
The National Weather Service Phoenix AZ issued the warning at 1:12 AM MST on September 10, citing a Major Heat Risk for the region. Affected locations include Central Phoenix, North Phoenix/Glendale, Deer Valley, Scottsdale/Paradise Valley, Buckeye/Avondale, Northwest Valley, East Valley, Cave Creek/New River, Fountain Hills/East Mesa, South Mountain/Ahwatukee, and Southeast Valley/Queen Creek.
Officials warn that extreme heat significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses. Overexposure can lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion, which can escalate to heat stroke if intervention does not occur.
In Maricopa County, residents can call 2-1-1 or visit https://www.maricopa.gov/heat to access free cooling centers, water, transportation, and additional support services. Public cooling shelters are operational in specific areas across the region.
For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Anyone experiencing heat stroke should be moved to a cool, shaded environment immediately, as heat stroke is a medical emergency requiring a call to 911.
