The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for the Phoenix metropolitan area from Monday morning through Wednesday evening. Afternoon temperatures between 109 and 112 degrees are anticipated, bringing a major heat risk to the region.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Phoenix AZ issued the watch on August 14 at 12:13 AM MST. The alert applies to the Phoenix metropolitan area, including Northwest Valley, Buckeye/Avondale, Deer Valley, Central Phoenix, North Phoenix/Glendale, Scottsdale/Paradise Valley, East Valley, South Mountain/Ahwatukee, and Southeast Valley/Queen Creek. The watch remains in effect from Monday, August 17 at 10:00 AM MST through Wednesday, August 19 at 8:00 PM MST.
Dangerously hot conditions are expected during this period, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 109 to 112 degrees. The NWS warns that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Overexposure can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, which may escalate to heat stroke if intervention is not provided.
For outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Officials state that anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location, and 911 should be called immediately for heat stroke emergencies.
