Flash Flood Warning Issued for Oahu Until 5:45 PM HST
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Oahu, effective until 5:45 PM HST on August 16. Heavy rainfall moving over the Koolau Mountains is triggering ongoing or imminent flash flooding.
At 2:52 PM HST, Doppler radar indicated a band of heavy rain moving over the windward side of Oahu, focused primarily over the Koolau Mountains. Rainfall rates were estimated between 1 and 2.5 inches per hour.
The heavy precipitation has caused Waiahole and Manoa Streams to become elevated once again. Flash flooding is currently ongoing or anticipated to begin shortly in low-lying and poor drainage areas across the island.
Expected impacts include flooding in small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Locations expected to experience flash flooding include Honolulu, Waipio, Waiahole, Waikane, Kahaluu, Ahuimanu, Aiea, Pearl City, Halawa, Moanalua, Mililani, and Salt Lake.
