Flood Watch Issued for Parts of Hawaii Due to Hurricane Nolo
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for the Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe effective through Saturday afternoon due to Hurricane Nolo.
Hurricane Nolo is expected to bring heavy showers to the eastern end of the state over the weekend. Significant heavy rain is likely over the windward and southeast Big Island, as well as portions of Maui County.
Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible across the affected areas. Significant flooding may occur due to the overflow of streams and drainages, and roads in several areas may experience closures alongside property damage in urban or low-lying spots due to runoff. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.
Deep moisture on the north side of Hurricane Nolo will bring heavy showers to the Big Island, and to a lesser extent to Maui through Saturday. Windward and southeast Big Island, and windward Maui are the most likely to experience heavy rain due to the slow-moving system, with considerable flooding possible over the remaining portions of the Big Island and Maui through Saturday. The remainder of Maui County has a lower possibility of flooding, but remains at risk.
