Flood Watch Issued for the Big Island Due to Hurricane Nolo
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for the Big Island effective through late tonight. The watch is in effect from September 26 at 4:48 PM HST until September 27 at 6:00 AM HST.
Hurricane Nolo is currently located south-southeast of the Big Island and is beginning to move more quickly off to the west. The storm brings the possibility of heavy rain that could lead to localized flooding over portions of the Big Island through tonight.
Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible across the Big Island, with windward and southeast portions at the highest risk. These areas remain particularly vulnerable because the ground is already saturated from recent rains.
Impacts from the severe weather may include closures of flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Additionally, urban areas may experience more significant flooding and property damage resulting from rapid runoff.
The National Weather Service advises residents and visitors to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
