Flood Watch Issued for the Hawaiian Islands

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for multiple regions across the Hawaiian Islands due to remnant moisture from former Tropical Storm Norbert. The alert remains in effect until early Friday morning.

A Flood Watch has been put in place beginning September 16 at 3:41 PM HST and will run until September 18 at 6:00 AM HST. The affected areas include Niihau, Kauai, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, The Big Island, and Kahoolawe, spanning specific zones such as Kauai Mountains, Waianae Coast, Oahu North Shore, Central Oahu, and the Big Island Interior.

Remnant moisture from former Tropical Storm Norbert is expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy showers to the islands. Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible throughout the duration of the watch.

Impacts from the severe weather may include closures of flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas could experience more significant flooding and property damage as a result of rapid runoff.

Additionally, a band of moisture will move east across the islands, bringing locally heavy showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms on Thursday. These storms could produce briefly higher rain rates, further increasing the risk of flash flooding.
