The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Hurricane Watch for the Big Island East area, including Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano, beginning September 24 at 11:00 PM HST.
The latest local forecast indicates equivalent tropical storm force winds with peak wind forecasts of 30 to 40 mph and gusts reaching up to 55 mph. Due to uncertainties in track, size, and intensity, there is a potential for winds ranging from 58 to 73 mph.
Potential impacts include significant damage to roofing, siding materials, porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildings may experience window, door, and garage door failures, and mobile homes could sustain damage, particularly if unanchored. Unsecured lightweight objects may also become dangerous projectiles.
Additional hazards involve several large trees being snapped or uprooted, especially in areas with shallow roots, alongside blown-over fences and roadway signs. Some roads, bridges, causeways, and access routes may become impassable due to large debris. Scattered power and communications outages are expected, with higher prevalence in areas featuring above-ground lines.
A localized storm surge is also possible, with a potential peak storm surge inundation of 1 to 3 feet.
