Hurricane Watch Issued for Big Island East

The National Weather Service Honolulu HI issued the Hurricane Watch on September 25 at 10:56 PM HST. Affected locations include Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano.
The latest local forecast indicates below tropical storm force wind, with a peak wind forecast of 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 35 mph. However, due to uncertainty in track, size, and intensity, there is a potential for winds ranging from 58 to 73 mph. The wind threat has remained nearly steady from the previous assessment.
Potential impacts include significant damage to roofing, siding materials, porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildings may experience window, door, and garage door failures, and mobile homes could be damaged, particularly if unanchored. Unsecured lightweight objects may become dangerous projectiles.
Additional potential impacts involve several large trees snapped or uprooted, fences and roadway signs blown over, and some roads and bridges rendered impassable by large debris. Scattered power and communications outages are also expected, being more prevalent in areas with above-ground lines. Additionally, localized storm surge is possible, with a potential inundation of 1 to 3 feet.
