National Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for Kauai, Niihau, and Oahu

October 7, 2026 · wweather1 editorial · 2 min read

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for Kauai, Niihau, and Oahu, effective from Wednesday evening, October 7, through Thursday afternoon, October 8. A developing low-pressure system north of the islands is expected to bring heavy rain and potential flash flooding to the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the Flood Watch will begin at 6:00 PM HST on October 7 and remain in effect until 6:00 PM HST on October 8. A developing area of low pressure north of the Hawaiian Islands is drawing deep tropical moisture northward, resulting in a threat of heavy rain over Kauai and Oahu starting tonight.

Forecasters expect heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms to develop tonight and continue through Thursday. There is a possibility of training heavy showers, which can produce intense rain rates over the same areas.

Excessive rainfall during this period may cause flash flooding. Anticipated impacts include the potential closure of flood-prone roads and low-lying areas due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas could experience more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff.

The Flood Watch covers several areas, including Niihau, Kauai Southwest, Kauai Mountains, Kauai North, Kauai East, Kauai South, the Waianae Coast, Oahu North Shore, Olomana, Central Oahu, the Waianae Mountains, East Honolulu, the Honolulu Metro area, Ewa Plain, Koolau Windward, and Koolau Leeward.
