National Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for Portions of New York and New Jersey
The National Weather Service in Upton, New York, has issued a Flood Watch from late tonight through Sunday morning for parts of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York. Heavy downpours and thunderstorms could cause flash flooding across low-lying and poor drainage areas.
The alert was issued at 2:20 AM EDT on September 12 and is scheduled to remain in effect until 11:00 AM EDT on September 13. Forecasters indicate that showers featuring heavy downpours and a few thunderstorms could bring significant precipitation to the region late tonight into Sunday morning.
Average rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches across the affected areas, with locally higher amounts possible. Peak hourly rainfall rates may reach between 1.5 and 2 inches during the heaviest storms.
The Flood Watch covers several counties in southeast New York, including Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Northern Queens, Southern Queens, and Southern Westchester. In northeast New Jersey, covered areas include Hudson County, alongside the Eastern and Western regions of Bergen, Essex, Passaic, and Union counties.
Excessive runoff from the expected rainfall may result in flooding along rivers, creeks, and streams, as well as in urban low-lying and poor drainage locations.
