National Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for South Central Arizona
The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Flood Watch for portions of south central Arizona from Sunday evening through late Sunday night. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible across the region.
The alert was issued on August 29 at 11:34 PM MST and runs until August 31 at 5:00 AM MST. Affected areas include Aguila Valley, Buckeye/Avondale, Cave Creek/New River, Central Phoenix, Deer Valley, East Valley, Fountain Hills/East Mesa, Mazatzal Mountains, New River Mesa, North Phoenix/Glendale, Northwest Valley, Rio Verde/Salt River, Scottsdale/Paradise Valley, South Mountain/Ahwatukee, Southeast Valley/Queen Creek, Tonopah Desert, and Tonto Basin.
Ample moisture and atmospheric instability will combine with a weather system positioned over western portions of the region to promote scattered thunderstorms. These storms are expected to produce heavy rainfall from Sunday evening into Sunday night.
Forecasters warn that training of thunderstorms could result in localized rainfall amounts of over two inches within the watch area. Excessive runoff from these storms may cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations.
