National Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for South Central Arizona
The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Flood Watch for portions of south central Arizona from 6:00 PM MST on August 30 until 5:00 AM MST on August 31. Scattered thunderstorms bringing heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding across the region.
The Flood Watch was announced at 11:32 AM MST on August 30 due to atmospheric instability and moisture interacting with a weather system over the western part of the region. This pattern is expected to trigger another round of showers and thunderstorms from this evening through late tonight, with heavy rain being particularly likely across Maricopa and Pinal Counties.
According to the National Weather Service, repeated storms moving over the same areas—known as training—could lead to localized rainfall totals exceeding two inches. Excessive runoff from these heavy downpours may lead to the flooding of streams, creeks, rivers, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations.
The alert covers a wide portion of south central Arizona. Affected locations include Central Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale, Avondale, Buckeye, Deer Valley, Cave Creek, Apache Junction, Fountain Hills, the East Valley, Northwest Pinal County, West Pinal County, Globe/Miami, Tonto Basin, San Carlos, and surrounding desert and mountain areas.
