National Weather Service Issues Flood Watch for Southeast Texas

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for portions of southeast Texas from late tonight through Wednesday morning due to heavy rainfall associated with Potential Tropical Cyclone Five.

The National Weather Service office in Houston/Galveston TX issued the Flood Watch on August 31 at 10:14 AM CDT. The watch is scheduled to take effect late tonight and will remain active until September 2 at 7:00 AM CDT.

The alert covers multiple locations across southeast Texas, including San Jacinto, Polk, Montgomery, Northern Liberty, Southern Liberty, Inland Harris, Coastal Harris, Chambers, Inland Galveston, Coastal Galveston, Galveston Island, and Bolivar Peninsula.

Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected to begin late tonight and last into late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. Forecast models predict general rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches, with isolated totals of 6 to 9 inches, particularly in areas located east of Interstate 45.

Rainfall rates may exceed 3 to 4 inches per hour during the heaviest downpours. This rate of accumulation could lead to excessive runoff and flash flooding in urban and vulnerable areas, as well as rising water levels in rivers, creeks, streams, and poor drainage locations.
