NWS Chicago Issues Flood Watch for Portions of Illinois and Indiana
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for parts of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana from late tonight through Saturday morning due to potential flash flooding.
The National Weather Service in Chicago issued the Flood Watch at 1:47 PM CDT on September 18, and it remains in effect until 1:00 PM CDT on September 19. The watch covers Cook, De Kalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, Lee, and Northern Will counties in Illinois, as well as Lake and Porter counties in northwest Indiana.
Showers and thunderstorms expected late tonight through Saturday morning may produce widespread rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour. Excessive rainfall of this intensity could lead to rapid-onset flash flooding, particularly in urban areas and locations with poor drainage.
Rising water levels may cause creeks and streams to overflow their banks, and roads and streets could become flooded. Additional thunderstorms from Saturday evening into early Sunday morning may bring torrential rainfall, which could necessitate a second Flood Watch for the region.
