NWS Honolulu Issues Flood Watch for Big Island
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for the Big Island, effective from September 26 at 5:26 PM HST until September 27 at 6:00 AM HST. Heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Nolo could cause localized flash flooding across the region.
Hurricane Nolo is currently located south-southwest of the Big Island and is beginning to move more quickly toward the west. Heavy rain from the system poses a threat of localized flooding through late tonight.
The watch encompasses Kona, Kohala, Big Island Interior, Big Island Summit, Big Island South, Big Island Southeast, Big Island East, and Big Island North. Windward and southeast portions of the island are at the greatest risk for flooding due to saturated ground from recent rainfall.
Runoff and overflowing streams may result in the closure of flood-prone roads and low-lying areas. Rapid runoff in urban locations may lead to more significant flooding and potential property damage.
