NWS Honolulu Issues Flood Watch for Big Island Ahead of Tropical Storm Moke
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for the Big Island, effective from late Saturday night through Monday evening. Tropical Storm Moke is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the area, raising the risk of flash flooding.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Honolulu HI issued the alert on August 22 at 3:06 AM HST. The watch remains in effect until August 24 at 6:00 PM HST, covering Kona, Kohala, Big Island Interior, Big Island Summit, Big Island South, Big Island Southeast, Big Island East, and Big Island North.
Tropical Storm Moke is forecast to bring heavy rain to portions of the Big Island from late tonight through Monday afternoon. Windward and southeast slopes may receive rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches, with localized amounts reaching up to 15 inches. Because recent heavy rain has already saturated the ground, flash flooding could occur without a significant amount of additional rainfall.
Potential impacts include the closure of flood-prone roads and low-lying areas due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Rapid runoff in urban areas could also lead to more significant flooding and property damage.
Weather officials advise people in the affected areas to stay informed by monitoring subsequent forecasts and to be ready to act if Flash Flood Warnings are issued.
