NWS Honolulu Issues Statewide Flood Watch for Hawaiian Islands
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for all main Hawaiian Islands from Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon due to incoming heavy rainfall. Moisture associated with Hurricane Lowell is expected to create conditions favorable for flash flooding.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued the Flood Watch on September 5 at 3:44 PM HST. The alert covers all main Hawaiian Islands, including Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island. The watch goes into effect on Sunday evening and remains active until Tuesday, September 8, at 6:00 PM HST.
According to forecasters, moisture moving along the eastern flank of Hurricane Lowell will bring periods of heavy rain to the region. The threat of heavy rainfall will initially be highest along windward and mountain areas before spreading state-wide as winds shift to a more southerly direction by Monday.
Excessive rainfall may lead to flash flooding across low-lying regions and overflowing streams. Urban areas face risks of rapid runoff that could result in significant flooding and property damage, while flood-prone roads may be closed.
