NWS Honolulu Issues Tropical Storm Warning for Honolulu Metro
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the Honolulu Metro area, affecting locations including Salt Lake, Honolulu, and Kaimuki.
The warning was issued on September 7 at 4:51 PM HST. The latest local forecast calls for winds below tropical storm force, with a peak wind forecast of 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph. However, due to uncertainties in track, size, and intensity, there is a potential for winds ranging from 39 to 57 mph. Residents are advised that the wind threat has remained nearly steady from the previous assessment.
Potential impacts include limited damage, such as harm to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes, along with unsecured lightweight objects being blown about. Many large tree limbs may be broken off, and a few trees could be snapped or uprooted, particularly in areas with shallow-rooted trees. Additionally, some fences and roadway signs may be blown over.
Travel conditions could be affected, with a few roads becoming impassable from debris, especially in urban or heavily wooded areas, and hazardous driving conditions anticipated on bridges and elevated roadways. Scattered power and communications outages are also expected. No storm surge inundation is forecast, and there is little to no threat of storm surge flooding, though rough surf is noted.
Efforts to protect property should currently be underway, and individuals are advised to plan for hazardous wind of equivalent tropical storm force. Action should be taken now to complete preparations before the wind becomes hazardous.
