The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Watch for all main Hawaiian Islands, effective from 6:00 AM HST on October 27 through 5:00 AM HST on October 29. A weather trough is expected to bring abundant tropical moisture, generating heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms across the state.
According to the National Weather Service, a trough moving over the state will bring heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms with intense rain rates. The high moisture levels are forecast to persist through at least Wednesday night, creating conditions favorable for flash flooding.
While all main Hawaiian Islands are at risk, forecasters anticipate that the greatest flood threat will be focused over Oahu and Maui County. The watch covers regions including Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island.
Anticipated impacts include significant flooding caused by overflowing streams and drainage systems. Excess runoff may result in road closures and property damage in low-lying or urban areas. Landslides are also possible in locations with steep terrain.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 5:00 AM HST on Thursday, October 29. Weather officials recommend that residents monitor updated forecasts as the system develops.
