NWS Issues Flood Watch for Parts of Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York
The National Weather Service in Upton, New York, has issued a Flood Watch for portions of southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and southeast New York. The watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening due to potential excessive rainfall.
The alert was issued on August 26 at 2:27 PM EDT and covers the timeframe from Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening, ending at 11:00 PM EDT on August 27. Affected regions in Connecticut include Northern and Southern Fairfield. In New Jersey, the watch covers Hudson, Bergen, Passaic, Essex, and Union counties. In New York, areas under the watch include Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, the Bronx, Nassau, Westchester, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland counties.
Forecast details indicate total rainfall amounts of around 1 to 1.5 inches across the watch area. However, localized areas could receive up to 3 inches of rain, with peak rainfall rates ranging between 1.5 and 2.5 inches per hour.
Excessive runoff from heavy rain may lead to the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams could rise out of their banks, and flooding may also occur in urban regions and areas with poor drainage.
