NWS Issues Flood Watch for Parts of Northeast New Jersey and Southeast New York
The National Weather Service in Upton, New York, has issued a Flood Watch through 12:00 PM EDT on September 13 for portions of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York due to potential flash flooding from excessive rainfall.
The alert was issued at 2:07 AM EDT on September 13. The watch area encompasses several locations in northeast New Jersey, including Eastern Bergen, Eastern Essex, Eastern Passaic, Eastern Union, Hudson, Western Bergen, Western Essex, Western Passaic, and Western Union. In southeast New York, affected locations include the Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Northern Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Southern Queens, and Southern Westchester.
According to the National Weather Service, showers featuring heavy downpours and a few thunderstorms are expected early Sunday morning into midday Sunday. Forecast average rainfall is expected to range between 1 and 2 inches, with locally higher amounts up to around 3 inches possible. Peak hourly rainfall rates could reach between 1.5 and 2 inches.
Excessive runoff from the precipitation may lead to flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, poor drainage areas, and other low-lying locations. Official guidance advises residents in flood-prone areas to monitor forecasts and be prepared to act if flooding develops.
