NWS Issues Flood Watch for Portions of Southeast Texas
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for several counties and coastal areas in southeast Texas due to expected heavy rainfall from Tropical Depression Five. The alert is in effect from 1:00 AM CDT Tuesday through Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service office in Houston/Galveston TX issued the alert on August 31 at 4:21 PM CDT. The Flood Watch covers San Jacinto, Polk, Montgomery, Northern Liberty, Inland Harris, Chambers, Inland Galveston, Southern Liberty, Coastal Harris, Coastal Galveston, Galveston Island, and Bolivar Peninsula. The watch is set to expire at 7:00 AM CDT on September 2.
Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Depression Five are expected to begin late tonight and continue through late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. Forecasters anticipate general rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches, with isolated amounts of 6 to 9 inches possible. The highest rainfall totals are expected to occur east of Interstate 45. Rainfall rates could exceed 3 to 4 inches per hour during peak downpours.
The excessive runoff generated by these storms may cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations. Poor drainage systems and urban areas face an increased risk of flash flooding during the event.
