The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a Flood Watch for several regions across Southwest California through Sunday, October 11, at 8:00 PM PDT. The alert comes as Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel brings periods of moderate to heavy rainfall to the area.
The Flood Watch was issued on October 10 at 9:16 PM PDT by NWS San Diego. Affected areas include the San Diego County Coastal Areas, Inland Valleys, Mountains, and Deserts, as well as the Riverside County Mountains, San Bernardino County Mountains, Apple and Lucerne Valleys, Coachella Valley, and San Gorgonio Pass near Banning.
According to the National Weather Service, Post-Tropical Cyclone Rachel will bring moderate to heavy rain across San Diego County, the Riverside County mountains and deserts, and the San Bernardino County mountains and deserts. The heaviest rainfall is expected through early Sunday afternoon, before tapering off from south to north on Sunday. Lighter lingering showers are expected to continue into Monday.
Maximum hourly rainfall rates could reach 0.50 to 0.60 inches per hour for the San Diego Coast and Valleys, 0.50 to 0.70 inches per hour across deserts, and 0.70 to 1 inch per hour across mountain areas. Excessive runoff from this rain may cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations.
