NWS Issues Hurricane Watch for Big Island East
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high-severity Hurricane Watch for the Big Island East area, including Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano. Residents are advised to complete preparations to protect life and property.
The Hurricane Watch was issued on September 23 at 4:56 PM HST. The affected locations include Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano.
The latest local forecast indicates below tropical storm force wind conditions, with a peak wind forecast of 25 to 35 mph and gusts reaching 40 mph. However, due to uncertainties in track, size, and intensity, there is a potential for winds ranging from 58 to 73 mph. The wind threat has remained nearly steady from the previous assessment, and the public is advised to plan for dangerous wind equivalent to strong tropical storm force.
Potential impacts include significant damage such as roofing and siding material loss, damage to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds, and potential window, door, and garage door failures on a few buildings. Mobile homes may be damaged, particularly if unanchored, and unsecured lightweight objects can become dangerous projectiles. Several large trees may be snapped or uprooted, along with downed fences and roadway signs.
Additional expected impacts involve road and bridge blockages from large debris, rendering some roads and access routes impassable. Scattered power and communications outages are anticipated, with greater prevalence in areas featuring above-ground lines. Additionally, localized storm surge is possible, with a potential inundation of 1 to 3 feet above ground.
