NWS Upton Issues Flood Watch for Portions of New York and New Jersey
The National Weather Service in Upton, New York, has issued a Flood Watch for parts of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York from Sunday morning through midday Sunday. Excessive rainfall from heavy showers and thunderstorms could result in local flooding.
The alert was issued on September 12 at 3:05 PM EDT and remains in effect from 4:00 AM EDT on September 13 until 12:00 PM EDT on September 13. Forecasters warn that excessive runoff may flood rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying locations across the region.
In New Jersey, the affected areas include Western Passaic, Eastern Passaic, Hudson, Western Bergen, Eastern Bergen, Western Essex, Eastern Essex, Western Union, and Eastern Union. In New York, the watch covers Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn (Kings), Staten Island (Richmond), Northern Queens, Southern Queens, and Southern Westchester.
Weather conditions early Sunday morning into midday Sunday are expected to bring showers with heavy downpours and scattered thunderstorms. Average rainfall totals are projected between 1.5 and 3 inches, with locally higher amounts of 5 to 7 inches possible. Peak rainfall rates could reach 2 to 2.5 inches per hour.
The National Weather Service advises residents in flood-prone areas to remain prepared as conditions develop during the specified watch period.
