Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Parts of Maricopa and Pinal Counties

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for portions of Maricopa and Pinal counties until 9:15 PM MST on August 30. The storm is capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts.

At 8:23 PM MST, radar indicated a severe thunderstorm located 9 miles south of South Mountain Park, or 10 miles west of Sun Lakes. The system is moving north at 15 mph.

The primary hazard associated with this severe thunderstorm is 60 mph wind gusts. Expected impacts include potential damage to roofs, siding, and trees in the path of the storm.

Locations impacted include Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Sun Lakes, Laveen, South Phoenix, Downtown Phoenix, South Mountain Park, Tumbleweed Park, Arizona Mills Mall, Gilbert City Hall, Chandler City Hall, and Arizona State University.

The warning area encompasses several major roadway stretches, including AZ Interstate 10 between mile markers 148 and 172, AZ Interstate 17 between mile markers 195 and 200, and US Highway 60 between mile markers 173 and 179.
