Special Marine Warning Issued for Tampa Bay and Surrounding Waters

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Marine Warning for Tampa Bay and adjacent coastal waters effective until 11:30 PM EDT on October 9.

According to the National Weather Service in Ruskin, a Special Marine Warning is in effect for Tampa Bay waters, coastal waters from Englewood to Tarpon Springs out 20 nautical miles, coastal waters from Tarpon Springs to Suwannee River out 20 nautical miles, and waters from Tarpon Springs to Suwannee River and Englewood to Tarpon Springs out 20 to 60 nautical miles.

Radar data at 9:58 PM EDT indicated a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts, extending from near the Suwannee River to 19 nautical miles southwest of Ozello and 42 nautical miles southwest of Longboat Pass. These storms were moving to the northeast at 35 knots.

Hazards associated with this system include waterspouts, wind gusts of 34 knots or greater, suddenly higher waves, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours. Impacted locations include Terra Ceia Bay, Howard Frankland Bridge, Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island, and numerous reefs and channels.

The public is advised that waterspouts can quickly form, capsize boats, damage vessels, and create suddenly higher waves.
