Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Southeast North Carolina and Northeast South Carolina

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for parts of southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina for August 17. Heat index values are expected to reach up to 114.

The Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from 11:00 AM EDT until 8:00 PM EDT on Monday, August 17. The warning covers Bladen, Columbus, Inland Pender, Coastal Pender, Inland New Hanover, Coastal New Hanover, Inland Brunswick, and Coastal Brunswick in North Carolina, as well as Florence, Marion, Williamsburg, Coastal Horry, Inland Georgetown, Coastal Georgetown, Central Horry, and Northern Horry in South Carolina.

Dangerously hot conditions are forecast during this period, with high humidity pushing heat index values up to 114. An Extreme Heat Watch has also been issued for the area from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, when heat index values up to 114 remain possible.

According to the National Weather Service, heat-related illnesses increase significantly during prolonged events of extreme heat and high humidity.
