The National Weather Service (NWS) Upton NY has issued an Extreme Heat Warning, effective from noon Wednesday to 9 PM EDT Friday, for Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Northern Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), and Southern Queens counties. An Extreme Heat Watch is also in effect for the same areas from Friday evening through Saturday evening.
Under the Extreme Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions are expected, with heat index values potentially reaching up to 111. For the Extreme Heat Watch, dangerously hot conditions are possible, with heat index values up to 103. This prolonged period of extreme heat and humidity is anticipated to significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for individuals engaged in outdoor work or activities. Forecasters indicate this could be a multi-day extreme heat event, bringing near-record high temperatures and minimal overnight temperature relief.
The sustained heat poses a potential danger to those without adequate cooling and hydration. Impacts to transportation infrastructure, as well as electrical and water systems, are also possible. Seniors, along with individuals with chronic health problems or mental health conditions, face an increased risk during this event. Residences without air conditioning may experience indoor temperatures much hotter than outside conditions.
