An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued by NWS Upton NY for New York City boroughs, including Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens. The watch, issued on July 1, is in effect through July 4 at 9:00 PM EDT.
The Extreme Heat Watch applies to New York (Manhattan), Bronx, Richmond (Staten Island), Kings (Brooklyn), Northern Queens, and Southern Queens counties. The watch anticipates dangerously hot conditions with heat index values potentially reaching 103 from Friday evening through Saturday evening.
A separate Extreme Heat Warning, also detailed in the advisory and valid until 9 PM EDT Friday, forecasts dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 111.
These conditions are expected to significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Seniors, individuals with chronic health problems, and those with mental health conditions are identified as being at an increased risk.
Homes without air conditioning can become much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
